Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about pricing, delivery, financing, and container condition grades.

How much does a shipping container cost?

Prices vary by size and condition. A 20ft container starts around $2,395, while a 40ft High Cube runs closer to $4,795. Reefers and modified units are priced separately based on configuration. See our full pricing guide for a size-by-size breakdown.

What’s the difference between the condition grades?

New/One-Trip units have made a single loaded ocean voyage with minimal wear. Cargo Worthy (CW) units pass a full structural and watertight inspection. Wind & Watertight (WWT) units are weatherproof but not cargo-certified — a lower-cost option for static storage. Read our new vs. used guide for help choosing.

How fast can a container be delivered?

Most orders ship within 5 to 10 business days, depending on your ZIP code and depot availability. See our delivery day guide for the full process.

Can I pick up my container from the depot instead?

Yes. Depot pickup is available on most orders and can reduce your total delivered cost.

Do I need a permit to place a container on my property?

Permit requirements vary by city and county. We recommend checking with your local zoning office before delivery day.

What size container do I need?

A 20ft unit suits most residential and small job-site storage. A 40ft or 40ft High Cube fits larger inventory, bulk storage, or conversion projects. Full dimensions are in our sizes guide.

Do you deliver outside the United States?

Yes — in addition to nationwide U.S. delivery, we export to Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and other destinations through major ports. International orders are quoted individually based on destination port, container type, and shipping method.

Is financing available?

Financing options are available on select orders — ask your sales contact for current terms. See our financing guide for how it works.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit and debit card payments securely processed through Stripe, as well as bank wire transfer for depot-direct orders.

What’s the difference between a new, one-trip, and used shipping container?

A one-trip container has made a single loaded ocean voyage and looks almost new. Used containers are graded cargo-worthy, wind-and-watertight, or as-is depending on condition. See our container grades explained guide for a full breakdown of each grade.

How long does a shipping container last?

A well-maintained container can last 20-30 years or more, since steel corrosion is slow when the paint coating stays intact and water isn’t allowed to pool. See our lifespan & maintenance guide for what extends or shortens that estimate.

Can shipping containers be used as a home or livable space?

Yes — container homes and cabins are a popular, faster alternative to traditional construction. It still requires permits, insulation, and proper utilities like any residence. See our container home building guide and browse homes & cabins for sale.

Are shipping containers weatherproof and watertight?

New and one-trip containers are fully weathertight from the factory. Used containers graded wind-and-watertight (WWT) are guaranteed to keep wind and rain out even though they show cosmetic wear. See our grades explained guide for details on each condition level.

How much does a shipping container weigh, and what’s the floor load rating?

Container weight and load capacity vary by size — see our weight limits & load capacity guide for exact figures by container size and type.

Can I modify or cut into a container myself?

You can, but any cut into the steel skin reduces structural rigidity and should be reinforced properly, especially around doors, windows, or large openings. See our modifications guide and our stacking & structural guide before cutting into a container.

What should I do to prepare my site before delivery?

Grade and level the site, ideally with a compacted gravel pad, and confirm the delivery truck has clear straight-line access to the drop location. See our foundation & site preparation guide and delivery process guide for full details.

Do you offer container rentals?

Yes — see our container rental options and our renting vs. buying guide to see whether renting or buying makes more sense for your timeline.

Do you offer container insurance?

We can point you to coverage options for a container’s structure and contents — see our container insurance guide for what’s typically covered and how to get a policy in place.

What’s included with a container purchase?

Every container includes delivery to an accessible site as quoted at checkout. Locks, lock boxes, vents, and other accessories are available as add-ons — see our security guide for what we recommend adding at delivery.

Do you sell 10ft containers?

Yes — see our 10ft containers for sale and our 10ft container guide for sizing and pricing versus larger units.

Can I get a container with climate control or HVAC already installed?

Yes — see our climate-controlled containers for sale, or add a mini-split HVAC unit to any container conversion.

What accessories can I add to my container?

Ramps, shelving, security cameras, lock boxes, vents, and desiccant kits are all available — see our full accessories guide for what fits your use case.

Can a container be towed or moved after delivery?

Yes, with the right setup — see our moving & transporting guide and our gooseneck tunnel kit for containers that need to relocate more than once.

What’s the difference between a working and non-working refrigerated container?

A working reefer has a tested, functional refrigeration unit. A non-working reefer keeps the insulated shell and sealed floor but the refrigeration equipment isn’t operational, which lowers the price for buyers who just want the insulated structure. See our reefer buying guide for details.

Can I landscape or build a deck around my container?

Yes — see our landscaping & curb appeal guide for deck, siding, and planting ideas that work well around a container.

Do you offer a backyard studio or she-shed option?

Yes — see our backyard studio guide for sizing and finishing ideas for a personal space in your yard.

How do I secure a container without electricity on-site?

A lock box needs no power at all, and a solar-powered security camera & motion light kit adds monitoring without hardwiring. See our security guide for a full setup.
